ENT (Ear Nose and Throat)

The Otolaryngology Department at Southern Health provides a comprehensive service for all children with conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat.

This can range from the straight forward elective insertion of grommets for hearing loss to the very complex diagnosis and management of infant airway disorders.

The department has close links with all paediatric services in the hospital. There is a close relationship with respiratory medicine. Together we manage the diagnosis and treatment of children with breathing disorders due to enlarged tonsils and adenoids ( obstructive sleep apnoea), young children with inhaled foreign bodies and other conditions of the upper airway.

We also work closely with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and assist in the investigation of infants with upper airway problems. We have a close relationship with the audiology department who assist us with the diagnosis of children with hearing impairment.

Outpatient service

A weekly outpatient service is provided for routine referrals of children with conditions affecting the ear nose and throat. Referrals are accepted from general practitioners and specialists with an interest in paediatric medicine and surgery. If you wish access to our service for your children your GP can contact the outpatient bookings department or send a referral letter to our department via the outpatient bookings department. Urgent requests are dealt with promptly. More routine or non urgent requests have a waiting period for consultation which will vary from time to time.

Outpatient bookings will be able to provide estimates of current waiting periods. Surgery is conducted at the Monash Medical centre, Clayton for complex conditions and very young children (usually 2 years and younger) with more routine cases conducted at Casey Hospital.
