Young Adults Diabetes Service (YADS)
What is YADS?
Monash Children's Young Adults Diabetes Service (YADS) is a clinic for young people with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1 and type 2) aged between 15 and 25 years. It is held in the early evening between 5 - 8 pm for the convenience of young people attending, to avoid the need for excessive time off from school or work. The clinic is staffed by Paediatric and Adult Endocrinologists and Diabetes Nurse Educators, a Dietitian, a Social Worker and a Podiatrist.Young people attending the Clinic may have been attending the Paediatric Diabetes Service at Monash Medical Centre Clayton or may have been referred from another doctor or clinic.

When?
The YADS Clinic is held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month (except when these fall on Public Holidays). Appointment times are between 5‑7 pm.Where?
The YADS Clinic is held in Clinic A, Outpatients Department on Level 2 (Ground Floor level), Monash Medical Centre, 246 Clayton Road, Clayton 3168.What does it cost?
YADS is a public outpatient clinic.There is no charge for consultations with the doctor, educator, dietitian, social worker or podiatrist when you see them in the YADS Clinic.
What do we offer patients attending the YADS Clinic?
- Confidential consultation with the doctor. You will be booked in to see the same doctor at each visit. Whilst parents are welcome to accompany you, we encourage you to see the doctor and other professionals in the Clinic alone.
- Everyone has a three monthly HbA1C (to assess long term control) with a finger prick performed at the clinic. Sometimes additional blood and urine tests may be requested by your doctor which can be performed in MMC Private Pathology until 6pm.
- Consultations are available during clinic time with a paediatric and adult endocrinologist and diabetes nurse educators, dietitian, social worker and podiatrist, all of whom attend the clinic regularly.
- Follow up consultations in DACS * with these professionals outside normal clinic times are available by arrangement, if necessary. Support is offered for those aged between 19 and 25 years for social work, psychology and dietetics.
- Social Work and Psychology support can be arranged for young people who need help with issues such as emotional, financial, school or work problems.
DACS
The Diabetes Ambulatory Care Service (DACS) is a day ward for patients with existing and newly diagnosed diabetes providing services of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Paediatric Endocrinologists and Diabetes Nurse Educators, Social Worker, Dietitian and Psychologist.For appointments phone 03 9594 4342 or fax 03 9594 6067.
