Working together for the health of our future

This exhibition showcases the past and present capacities of children’s services through photos and other historical documents that offer a comparison between children’s wards of the early 20th century and those of the 21st century. It demonstrates how certain services complement each other to provide complete child-focused continuity of care within a multi-disciplinary context from the time a child is born until it reaches the age of 18.

It also plays tribute to community-based support groups such as Monash Kids established in 1993; KOALA (Kids Oncology and Leukaemia Action Group) established in October 1991 and Chain Reaction, who play a major role in facilitating positive advancements in the treatment of children and adolescents.

Two other important providers of support for children at Southern Health are Kanooka Child Care Centre and Ronald McDonald House. Without these kinds of support, Southern Health would not be the leader that it is today in putting kids first in Melbourne’s South East and country Victoria.

Finally, the exhibition will focus on future developments. Future challenges facing Southern Health are the need to provide fresh leadership in children’s services in Victoria. Baby Leah’s amazing story shows us that Australian research into the causes of serious maternal and child illnesses must be encouraged with adequate funding as it is of enormous potential benefit to our society. As we look forward to a new era in community paediatrics, the new children’s hospital will be a complete centre of child health with state-of-the-art facilities.
