Paediatric Respiratory Medicine Unit
Asthma is one of Australia’s most common diseases with around 1:4 children, 1:7 adolescents and 1:10 adults having at least one episode of wheeze per year
The prevalence of asthma is increasing in Australia and other countries with a Westernised lifestyle. The causes of asthma are not fully understood and there is still no cure. However, in most people with asthma, the condition can be successfully managed.Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder with no known cure.
At Monash Medical Centre Clayton, the Department of Respiratory Medicine, led by Professor Nick Freezer, a sleep physician and paediatric respiratory illness specialist, provides an excellent clinical service for children with asthma and other respiratory diseases. In February 2000, the Department of Respiratory Medicine moved to a newly refurbished and expanded location at the Clayton Campus of Monash Medical Centre. As a result, the unit was able to offer the full range of services to children with respiratory illnesses, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD and sleep disorders.
The redevelopment at that time allowed all respiratory services to be brought together at the one site within the hospital including the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Unit.
