Dr Eve ADDIS
Honorary Clinical Assistant to Paediatric Clinic 1965-1973, QueenVictoriaMemorialHospital
Senior Paediatric Physiotherapist, who collaborated with Elizabeth Lewis on child care project in PNG. In 1996, Christine, a physiotherapist, and Miss Elizabeth Lewis, a neurosurgeon, visited Vanimo in Papua New Guinea during Chris’s annual leave to follow up children who had been sent to Monash Medical Centre for surgical management. As a result, the Blackburn-Lewis treatment centre was established at Vanimo, acknowledging the contribution of these two clinicians. When the Tsunami disaster in the region occurred in July 1998, she was among the first to offer her services, joining several others from Monash Medical Centre who travelled to the disaster zone. With limited resources but unlimited ingenuity she set up traction splinting for those with fractures and respiratory aids for those with pneumonia. In 2000, owing to her leadership and breadth of vision in addressing all facets of professional life, and her dedication to the more vulnerable both locally in Victoria and regionally in Papua New Guinea, Christine was considered a worthy recipient of the Physiotherapy Achievement Award, presented by the Victorian Branch of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. The award cites her almost thirty years of dedication to improving care for children with physical disabilities. Christine was praised as an outstanding clinician, teacher and mentor and enthusiastic advocate. In 2001, Christine was made a representative of VDAC, the Victorian DisAbility Advisory Council. In 2002, Christine alongside Brian Hoare from Occupational Therapy began different studies into the effects of Botulinum Toxin on patients with cerebral palsy.

Reverend Professor Victor YU
Head of MMC Newborn Services (retired 2007) Professor Yu introduced neonatal ventilation in the 1970s and laid the foundation for its international reputation, which this service has achieved over the last thirty years. Yu qualified in medicine from Hong KongUniversity in 1968 and trained in neonatal paediatrics at JohnRadcliffeHospital, Oxford, UK and McMaster University Medical Centre, Canada, under the mentorship of Sir Peter Tizard and Jack Sinclair respectively. He was originally appointed in 1976 to QueenVictoriaMemorialHospital and later Monash Medical Centre to establish the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Growth and Developmental Clinic as Foundation Director. Between 1983 and 1988, Professor Yu visited and lectured at PekingUnionMedicalCollege. Yu was involved in many “firsts” in the development of neonatology in Australia, including neonatal intensive care for infants down to 500 grams weight and 24 weeks. He is a prolific author of ten books, one hundred and seventy book chapters, two hundred and sixty journal papers and three hundred and sixty conference abstracts. He is also on the editorial board of several medical journals. Professor Yu remains as a consultant neonatologist to MMC’s Neonatal Unit, Professor of Neonatology at MonashUniversity and as Clinical Director of the Richie Centre for Baby Health Research.
Health Technology Services. Originally was Queen Vic’s Deputy Biomedical Engineer. In August 1986, it was reported that Frank Meacco, as Deputy Director of Biomedical Engineering, had produced a special light source for illumination of neonatal brachial blood circulation to facilitate blood sampling. Called the Velvet Touch Transilluminator, it uses fibre optics to provide a cool light, which is held against the neonate’s arm to illuminate the arteries and veins, enabling the blood sample to be taken. At that time there was no similar device available in Australia.
