Type 1 Diabetes
Depression and anxiety in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), and risk factors for T1DM. Each year 200 children and adolescents in Victoria are diagnosed with T1DM, and this is increasing by 9.3% each year. One third of these children are cared for at Monash Children’s. In collaboration with the Monash University School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine, our research focuses on the psychosocial difficulties experienced by children with diabetes, including the incidence of depression and anxiety, psychosocial risk factors in adolescents with recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis, and barriers that exist to their adherence to optimal diabetes care. Clinicians are also collaborating with the Murdoch Institute and the Royal Children’s Hospital in an NHMRC funded project to examine the early environment in T1DM prevention, with a particular focus on the role of vitamin D deficiency. Other national collaborative projects include an NHMRC funded research project with the Australian Children’s Diabetes DNA Repository to examine genetic determinants of T1DM, and a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funded Trialnet international project to examine the epidemiology and preventative strategies for T1DM. |
