Paediatric surgery
Monash Children’s provides care designed specifically for the needs of children and their families.
The Paediatric Surgery Department is home to ten attending paediatric surgeons, a rotating Paediatric Surgery Registrar and a Resident all working together to meet the patient needs.
Your child's care will be entrusted to one of our paediatric surgeons. However, in the event of an emergency or hospital stay, your child may receive care from another paediatric surgeon from within the team, along with one of our paediatric surgery resident physicians.
The paediatric surgery team also consists of a team of nurses who work together to provide support to the physicians and a contact for the family. They are specially trained in paediatric surgery and - once your child has been established as a patient - can answer your routine questions related to follow-up care, home care after surgery, prescriptions your child has been given, problems that may arise, and many others. The paediatric surgery nurses assist the physicians in most procedures and receive on-going training to continue to provide quality support.
Paediatric surgery also has office staff that support the surgeons, registrars and resident. These staff members will be your first link to the department and will provide you with appointment information, assistance in scheduling your child's clinic visit and surgery. If needed they can also provide information to the surgeons and nurses, explain your insurance and financial information and be available to answer your questions.
All of the surgery faculty have special interest and training in paediatric general and thoracic surgery, including airway problems, newborn surgery, management of injuries and paediatric tumours.
In addition, the new modalities of laparoscopy and thoracoscopy are also being utilised in children's surgery.
