Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service (VFPMS)

The Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service is a statewide paediatric medical service providing assessments and care for abused, assaulted and neglected children and young people.

It is a service provided by a network of doctors and other health professionals, operating throughout Victoria, governed by a consortium of service providers and funding agencies. The service providers are the Monash Medical Centre, the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Royal Children’s Hospital. The service is funded by Victoria Police and the Department of Human Services.

VFPMS provides face-to-face consultations, secondary consultations, education and training, service development and forensic opinion for Child Protection and the justice systems. The VFPMS collaborates with other health professionals, police and child protection workers to provide an integrated health response to injured and abused children. Services are provided 24/7 by the best person, at the best time, in the best way, using the most efficient and effective aspects of the Health system. Policies are evidence-informed and regularly reviewed. Early consultation is encouraged because this may minimize complications and reduce angst.

Clinical services in Melbourne are provided at Monash Medical Centre and Royal Children’s Hospital.
