Seeing a doctor/consultant

When you meet a doctor (or consultant) for the first time, he or she will probably start by asking you and your family lots of questions. This is to help find out what is making you unwell, and what would help to make you better.

Before you come in, have a think about how you've been feeling. It might really help to make a list of things to tell the doctor.

When the doctor has finished, you can ask him or her questions. If there's something the doctor says that you don't understand, you can always ask him or her to explain it again. They won't mind.

Scared of asking questions?

Are you ever afraid to ask your doctor or nurse a question? Or maybe you don’t understand what they are saying. Don’t worry, the medical people you see are there to help you, and explain things so you understand everything. Remember it is your body they are talking about and you have the right to know what is going on.
