Southern Health’s Chief Operating Officer Siva Sivarajah joined State Health Minister Daniel Andrews today to turn the first sod at the Berwick construction site.“Casey Hospital was opened in 2004 to meet the care needs of the growing population in Melbourne’s south-east corridor. It was a very welcome investment in public health care for this region that continues to serve the community to the highest standards possible,” Mr Sivarajah said.
“That is one of the reasons we are pleased the State Government committed to expand the Special Care Nursery here at Casey from 6 to 20 neonatal cots at a cost of over $4.2 million, which we look forward to opening next year.”
Mr Sivarajah and Minister Andrews were joined on the day by three-year-old Brayden Kotsch and his family who helped mark the special occasion.
“Brayden was born at Casey Hospital in 2007 and spent two weeks with respiratory concerns at the Special Care Nursery. We are well aware of the importance of this service and more imprtantly the need to expand it so even more families can benefit,” said Brayden’s mother Sarah.
Following the expansion the nursery will go from a Low Level 2 to a High Level 2 Nursery and will enable Casey Hospital to provide up to an estimated 1,000 additional births per annum increasing the annual number of births from 1,500 to 2,500.
Completion expected in late 2010.
