More than $36,000 raised for Monash Children’s Cancer Centre

A new program to keep children and teenagers connected with their school, classroom and friends during their cancer treatment has received a major boost with $36,500 raised locally.

The money will go towards the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre Classroom to Bedside program.

The Rotary Club of Emerald and District joined Southern Health’s Chief Executive Shelly Park at the Monash Medical Centre Clayton to officially declare the 2009 Kids Fun Run with Thomas event a success.

“The Monash Children’s Cancer Centre Clayton cares for over 30 percent of Victoria’s childhood cancer patients, with around 42 children receiving our specialized care daily,” Ms Park said.

“Every year we are grateful to the Emerald District Rotary Club and Puffing Billy Railway for organizing the annual Kids Fun Run with Thomas, and to Patrick Tessier from Bailey’s Day, who generously sponsors and supports this event.”

President of the Emerald Rotary Club, Mr Ken Miller, said the annual fundraiser was a fulfilling event for the entire community.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with the Southern Health Children's Cancer Centre over the years and I believe today's cheque brings the total amount raised for the centre to more than $200,000,” Mr Miller said.

“We are very proud to be working together to put on this great event each year. It is not only a fun day out for the family but also raises money for a fantastic cause.”
