Dandenong Special Care Nursery

Welcome to Monash Children’s Dandenong Special Care Nursery

Your baby has been admitted or transferred to the Special Care Nursery (SCN) for reasons explained to you by your doctor and nurse and will be under the care of a hospital Paediatrician. Our SCN is a 14 bed high dependency unit. We aim to provide family centred care to you and your baby during your stay in the nursery. We encourage you to participate as much as possible in your baby’s care when possible.

There are 5 paediatricians that work at Dandenong hospital who visit daily, usually between 0800 – 1200hrs to review your baby’s progress, a paediatric registrar or resident are available in the hospital 24hrs/day.

The Nurse Unit Manager usually works Monday-Friday and is available throughout the day to discuss your baby’s nursing care and treatment or any concerns you may have.

Please do not hesitate to ask nursing or medical staff any questions regarding the care of your baby.  Hand washing
Hand washing is essential every time someone enters the nursery. The pink hand solution may also be used if hands are not soiled.

Visitors

Visiting hours for parents are open and parents are encouraged to ring and visit whenever they desire. Please let staff know when you can come in to feed, bath or spend time with your baby so you can be involved with your baby’s day-to-day care. Visitors are welcome, but we prefer them to be accompanied by you. In the absence of parents, visitors without a visitors card will be denied access to seeing your baby. Visitors with a visitors card are able to look at your baby, and only able to touch/cuddle the baby if you have given permission for them to do so (written on the visitor’s card), and only if it is appropriate for your baby. Due to limited space and for respect of the other families, only two (2) visitors at a time are permitted for each baby (excluding parents). Your baby’s siblings are most welcome to visit with supervision. Children under 12, who are NOT siblings, are NOT permitted in the nursery, for infection reasons.

We ask that parents and visitors respect the privacy of all the babies and families, please do not wander, touch or ask about other babies.

Parent’s room

Parent’s room is available for you to spend time with your baby. The room is located within the nursery and is equipped for breastfeeding, expressing, bathing and cuddling your baby. This is a quiet area for baby and family, however space is limited, therefore visitors are restricted to 2 per baby. There is a TV located in the parent’s room, which can be used for both leisure and educational purposes. Please ensure you are considerate of others when watching TV. There is coffee, tea and juice available in the nursery for parents and siblings only. Food can be purchased at the café or kiosk near the main entrance. You may also bring your own food and use the fridge. HOT DRINKS ARE NOT PERMITTED in the parent’s room as this prevents potential spills or burns to your baby.
