Shared Care

On each ward, you and your child will participate in shared care.

This concept has been designed to include you in the management of your child's care and speedy recovery.

Shared Care recognises that you are the one who knows your child's needs better than anyone and are a very important part of the team looking after your child in hospital.

When your child is admitted, the nurse will explain what is going to happen and discuss how much you want to be involved in your child's care. Where possible, your involvement in care will be discussed with the nurse at the beginning of each shift, who will take into account changes in your child's condition and nursing care.

Some parents ask “what will I be able to do for my child?” As a parent you may wish to bathe, feed, comfort and play with your child as you do at home or participate in such things as application of dressings, small procedures, catheter and drip care.

If you would like to assist in the care of your child, your nurse will be there to teach and support you until you feel confident. Being involved in your child's care is important, however, when you need to take a break you are encouraged to do so.
